Stratospheric Modelling & Chemical Weather

ISSI (International Space Science Institute) is a scientifically independent and neutral Space- and Earth Science institute that advances science by facilitating colalborations in a multi-disciplinary environment. ISSI is based in Bern, Switzerland and funds international teams (8-15 researchers including 15% early career scientists) with complementary expertise from different insitutions and countries worldwide. International teams hold a series of meetings (tipically 2 or 3) over a period between 18 and 24 months. The aim of international teams is to carry out research projects leading to publications in scientific journals.

The stratospheric modeling team at BIRA-IASB is involved in the ISSI-StratTransport-core team. The goal of this team is to produce an updated evaluation of stratospheric transport in Chemistry-Climate Models (CCMs), with a focus on the dynamically-driven tracer variability, and in doing so enhance understanding of transport processes. To achieve this, the team proposes to use satelite observations (e.g., SWOOSH, SAGE-CCI-OMPS+,...) of long-lived and other relevant tracers (e.g., O3, N2O, H2O,...) to evaluate the output of CCMs participating in different model intercomparison projects (CCMI-1, CCMI-2022 and CMIP6). Meteorological (e.g., ERA5, MERRA2....) and chemical reanalyses (BRAM2, M2-SCREAM) will also be used to evaluate some diagnostics.
