Stratospheric modelling

The Climate Change Initiative (CCI) is a programme setup by the European Space Agency (ESA). CCI will realise the full potential of long-term global Earth that ESA and its Member States have established over the last 30 years, as a significant and timely contribution to the Essential Climate Variable database required by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

One of the CCI projects is dedicated to Ozone. The ozone layer protects life on Earth from ultraviolet solar radiation and plays an important role on the radiation budget of the atmosphere. Its evolution is intimately coupled to climate change. Ozone_cci aims at generating new high-quality satellite data sets that are essential to assess the fate of atmospheric ozone and better understand its link with anthropogenic activities.

Within Ozone_cci, the stratospheric modelling group will explore the possibility to interpolate observation values in unobserved regions using data assimilation technics. This will be done by using the Belgian Assimilation System of Chemical ObsErvations (BASCOE), developped in-house. The ESA CCI total ozone observations by the SCIAMACHY instruments in 2008 will be used as for a case study. This project is supposed to end in December 2017.
